When Life Feels Full: Finding Your Way Back to Balance

Sep 5
3 min read

There are seasons when life doesn’t necessarily feel bad.

It just feels full.

The calendar is full. Your mind is full. The laundry basket is full. Your workday spills into your evening, there are things around the house that need your attention, people you love that you want to spend time with, goals you’re excited about, and somewhere in the middle of all of it... you’re trying to take care of yourself too.

I know that season.

And lately, I’ve been reminding myself of something I often remind the women I coach:

Balance doesn’t mean having everything perfectly under control.

Sometimes balance simply means recognizing what needs more of you right now, what needs less, and what can wait.

Balance Changes With the Season

We often picture a balanced life as everything fitting neatly into its own little box.

Work.

Marriage.

Family.

Health.

Home.

Friendships.

Faith.

Goals.

But real life rarely behaves that nicely.

Some weeks your career will require more energy. Some seasons your family will. Sometimes your health needs to move to the front of the line. And sometimes you may realize that something you've been giving a lot of energy to doesn't deserve quite so much anymore.

Balance isn't giving everything equal attention.

It is giving the right things your attention.

Start With What Matters Most

When everything feels important, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

Instead of asking yourself, How do I get everything done? try asking:

What matters most in this season of my life?

That question changes things.

Maybe what matters most is reconnecting with your spouse.

Maybe it's finally taking care of your health instead of putting yourself last.

Maybe you're ready to make a career change, start something new, or figure out who you are after a major life transition.

Maybe you simply need more quiet.

You don't need ten priorities.

You need clarity about the few that matter most right now.

You Are Allowed to Put Something Down

This one can be difficult for women.

We become very good at carrying things.

Responsibilities. Expectations. Other people's needs. Old commitments. Things we've always done simply because we've always done them.

Eventually, we can become so accustomed to carrying everything that we forget to ask whether it still belongs in our hands.

Sometimes creating balance isn't about adding a better morning routine, a new planner, or another healthy habit.

Sometimes it's about putting something down.

What can be simplified?

What can be delegated?

What can wait?

What are you continuing out of habit instead of necessity?

Creating space can be just as powerful as creating a new goal.

Put Yourself Back on the List

Taking care of yourself doesn't require an elaborate wellness routine.

It may look like going for a walk.

Making an appointment you've been putting off.

Going to bed earlier.

Having coffee without scrolling through your phone.

Getting outside.

Praying.

Eating something that actually nourishes you.

Saying no.

Spending an evening with someone you love and letting the rest of the list wait until tomorrow.

Small choices count.

In fact, those small choices are often where a more balanced life begins.

Your Version of Balance Gets to Be Yours

There isn't one perfect schedule, routine, diet, career path, or definition of wellness.

And that's one of the things I love about coaching.

We get to explore.

What do you want your days to feel like?

What gives you energy?

What is draining you?

What are you ready for more of?

What might you be ready to leave behind?

You don't have to redesign your entire life this weekend.

You can begin with one small decision that moves you closer to the life you want to be living.

And maybe that's the gentle reminder we all need sometimes:

You don't need all of your ducks perfectly in a row. You just need to decide which direction you want them walking.

Michelle's Gentle Reminder

This week, ask yourself:

What would make my life feel 10% more balanced?

Not perfect.

Not completely organized.

Just a little lighter, calmer, healthier, or more connected.

Start there.
